The First Question God Asked Humanity After the Fall
After Adam and Eve ate from the tree, they heard God walking in the garden and hid themselves. Then God called to Adam: “Where art thou?” — Genesis 3:9 (KJV)
God obviously did not need directions to find Adam.
The question appears to expose something deeper: Adam's relationship with God had changed.
Before the fall, humanity lived openly in God's presence. After sin entered the picture, one of Adam and Eve's first responses was hiding.
That pattern continues throughout Scripture—and human life. Sin often makes us want to withdraw from the very One we need.
The Bible begins the story of fallen humanity with God searching for people who are hiding from Him.
And much later, Jesus describes His own mission this way:
“For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.” — Luke 19:10 (KJV)
